Motherhood and homemaking is filled to the brim with mundane and repetitive tasks. Cleaning and dishes tend to feel endless. In fact, it often feels like the first and last things I do everyday involve my kitchen sink. So today I would love to share with you the simple way I clean the kitchen sink with minimal effort (when it’s empty that is).
Back when I was first married, my mom shared with me something my sister-in-law had shared with her. Ever since, it has been my go-to for cleaning the kitchen sink as well as our bathroom tubs and sinks.
Let me preface by sharing that I strive to keep our home as non toxic as possible. I struggle with autoimmune illnesses and other members of my family have food allergies that seem to indicate deeper root issues. So I try to eliminate the presence of anything that would worsen these factors. That being said, this is a low toxin cleaning solution. But you can make it non-toxic by using a different dish soap.
Without further ado, here are the two ingredients you’ll need to clean your kitchen sink:
- White Distilled Vinegar
- Dish Soap
I usually start with ¼-½ cup of soap and add enough vinegar to liquify it. My goal is to easily spray the mixture and avoid it getting stuck in the spray nozzle.
I keep the solution in whatever bottle I have available. Always strive to use glass if you can afford it, though, especially if utilizing essential oils. Essential oils have the capacity to break down plastic, which isn’t helpful for the reaping the benefits of the oils or for the longevity of your plastic spray bottle.

Here’s a step by step of my process:
- After you empty your sink (and hopefully have a kitchen filled with clean dishes), spray the mixture all around your sink.
- Let the solution rest on the surface of your sink for 30-60 seconds.
- Wipe clean with a fresh rag.
- Rinse with water.
- Dry the sink one more time.
This cleaning solution isn’t new to the internet, but my goal here at Where the Lilacs Bloom is to share with you what my life looks like and what works for me. And I’m all about simplicity. Nothing quite says simplicity like a two ingredient, minimal step process to a clean sink.
Who doesn’t love a shiny sink. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! This is so cool! I’ll have to try it. I’d love to see a list of things you use to clean with. ❤️
I love this idea!!:)
I can’t wait to try this recipe out!
I should have read this before last night! I just gave my sink a good scrub down.
I didn’t know about essential oils breaking down plastic. I need to look for other solutions….I have the glas bottles, but for the spray tops, it has the plastic hose.
